Our Neural-Enabled Prosthesis receives FDA Clearance.
NIKAO, in conjunction with Florida International University, developed a Neural-Enabled Prosthesis (NEP) system. The developed NEP system consists of an Instrumented Prosthetic Hand (IPH), a Stimulation System (SS) and a custom communication interface (Implant Hand Interface – IHI) between the IPH and the SS. Sensors were implanted on each finger of the Prosthetic Hand to provide feedback (simulated sense of touch and feel) to the user. The sensor outputs from the hand are continuously sampled, digitized and transferred to the processor on the (SS) by the circuitry on the (IHI). The processor maps the sensor data to corresponding stimulation parameters and subsequently transfers them to the Implanted Stimulator and Recorder (ISR) through an RF coil. Based on the input parameters, the ISR delivers corresponding electrical impulses to the peripheral nerve through the attached custom Longitudinal Intrafascicular Electrodes (LIFEs). Therefore, providing the user with the simulated sense of touch and feel they desire from the Prosthetic Hand to the implant in the arm.
